The Show by John A. Heldt Review

Seattle, 1941. Grace Vandenberg, 21, is having a bad day. Minutes after Pearl Harbor is attacked, she learns that her boyfriend is a time traveler from 2000 who has abandoned her for a future he insists they cannot share. Determined to save their love, she follows him into the new century. But just when happiness is within her grasp, she accidentally enters a second time portal and exits in 1918. Distraught and heartbroken, Grace starts a new life in the age of Woodrow Wilson, silent movies, and the Spanish flu. She meets her parents as young, single adults and befriends a handsome, wounded Army captain just back from the war. In THE SHOW, the sequel to THE MINE, Grace finds love and friendship in the ashes of tragedy as she endures the trial of her life.

My Review

I had reviewed the first part of this story, The Mine, awhile back so getting to read the next installment was a treat. I remember all the characters clearly and felt happiness and sadness as my favorites came in and back out of the story. I am honestly so enamored with the authors writing, his characters, and the depth of the characters and setting that I hope he writes 20 more books. That wouldn’t even be enough probably. I read these books very slowly because I just didn’t want the story to end. The story has come full circle with Grace following Joel, and actually finding him and starting a new life with him. Then the unthinkable happens again. I cried and my heart wrenched so many times throughout this book. I am very rarely at a loss for words when it comes to my book reviews, but I am babbling here because it’s hard to put into words just how amazing this book is and the feelings it brings out in the reader.

The author weaves the act of time traveling so seamlessly into the story that there’s not even a thought of the plausibility of it. It is just part of the story and very easy to accept. The historical aspects of the story are described in great detail and are very interesting to read about. I love this series and I’m hoping there’s more to come soon! A BIG 5/5 for The Show!!
